Leadership & Staff of Clay Street Baptist Church

A shared calling to serve, lead, and love God’s people.

Rev. Larry J. Sykes, Jr. – Senior Pastor

Rev. Larry J. Sykes, Jr. serves as the twelfth pastor of Clay Street Missionary Baptist Church. He is a passionate preacher, teacher, and community leader who believes that strong faith and compassionate service go hand in hand.

Born in Kankakee, Illinois, Rev. Sykes answered his call to ministry in 2004 under the leadership of the late Rev. Alex T. Bond, Jr. at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in St. Anne, Illinois. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies from the University of Tennessee and a Master of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

Before coming to Clay Street, Rev. Sykes served as Pastor of Greater Good Hope Baptist Church in Louisville, where he became a recognized voice for justice and community engagement, leading the city’s “Ban the Box” effort to remove employment barriers for people with criminal records. His work earned several honors, including the Clyde T. Francisco Preaching Award, the Garland K. Offutt Award for Distinction in Church Leadership, and recognition as an Outstanding Community Leader by the Louisville Metro Council.

Since accepting the call to Clay Street in 2020, Pastor Sykes has led the congregation into a new era of renewal and innovation through Clay Street Online, expanded outreach programs, and renewed emphasis on evangelism and discipleship. He also serves on several community boards, including the Marnel C. Moorman Family Life Center, Child Town Inc., and the Shelby County Community Foundation.

Rev. Sykes is married to Ebony Sykes, and together they are the proud parents of Byron and Ariah. Above all, Pastor Sykes has a heart for preaching and teaching the Word of God and for leading people toward a transforming relationship with Jesus Christ.
